The Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico displays a vivid ruby hue and a bouquet defined by wild strawberries, red cherries, and dried hibiscus. On the palate, the wine is sleek and energetic, offering a core of bright red fruit layered with hints of white pepper, graphite, and tobacco leaf. Its structure is defined by fine-grained tannins and a persistent, citrus-laced freshness that carries through to a mineral-driven finish, making it a quintessential representation of high-altitude Sangiovese.
The history of Volpaia is inextricably linked to its namesake fortified village, which dates back to the 11th century as an essential outpost on the border between Florence and Siena. In the late 1960s, Raffaello Stianti purchased the estate as a gift for his daughter, Giovanella, who, along with her husband Carlo Mascheroni, transformed the medieval hamlet into a unique "gravity-fed" winery. By ingeniously hiding stainless steel tanks and Slavonian oak casks within the subterranean vaults of ancient palazzos and churches, the family preserved the architectural integrity of the village while pioneering organic viticulture. Today, the estate remains a family-run operation under the guidance of the Stianti Mascheroni family, maintaining its reputation as one of the most picturesque and technically proficient producers in the Radda subregion.
