Monte Bernardi’s Chianti Classico "Retromarcia" offers a pure and vibrant expression of Sangiovese, defined by its bright transparency and elegance. The palate is dominated by tart red cherries, wild strawberries, and crushed cranberries, underpinned by subtle notes of dried herbs and tilled earth. Its structure is lean and energetic, driven by a refreshing nerve that lifts the fruit and carries a fine, chalky mineral streak through a persistent finish. This is a traditional, unmanipulated wine that favors tension and grace over heavy extraction or oak influence.
Located in the high-altitude hills of Panzano’s Conca d’Oro, Monte Bernardi dates back to the late 19th century, but its modern era began in 2003 when it was acquired by the Schmelzer family. Michael Schmelzer spearheaded a transition to biodynamic agriculture, focusing on restoring the health of the shale and limestone-rich soils known as galestro and albarese. By prioritizing indigenous grapes and utilizing traditional fermentation vessels like large oak casks and concrete, the estate has become a leading voice for terroir-driven, minimal-intervention winemaking in the heart of the Chianti Classico region.
